If you are a teacher, you know how hard it is to make ends meet on just your teacher salary. It seems like we all need some extra income to help for other situations whether it is paying off debt, saving for the future, or paying for your children’s needs. After seeing countless people asking what kinds of side jobs are for teachers, I decided to compile a list that would allow you to work part-time from home.

Online English Teaching Jobs

Teaching English to Chinese students has really exploded over the past few years. There are several opportunities to get online and teach. You don’t have to have a teacher certification in English to apply for these opportunities. You only need to have a Bachelor’s degree, a computer with a camera, and a stable internet connection.

  1. VIPKid is the industry leader in teaching English to Chinese students from ages 4-12. If you get accepted, there is a six (6) month minimum commitment requirement. The class sessions are one-on-one, and are 30 minutes long. You do not have to create any lesson plans, those are done for you. You will have to review the material beforehand. Your payment is calculated on on a per-class basis between $7-9 + incentives. Do well on your demo lesson as this determines your base pay! The incentives are where you can really make some extra money. For example, there is a participation incentive for just showing up on time and teaching a lesson. Another incentive is based on the number of classes you finish in a month. It is estimated that you can earn between $14-22 per hour from the comfort of your home or even if you are on vacation with some downtime.   2. Qkids is an interactive online platform that connects Chinese English learners between 5-12 years old. Once you apply, you can expect to hear back within three (3) days. If you don’t hear back from them, it is likely you weren’t selected to move forward, but you can contact them to check the status of your application. Each class session is 30 minutes long and you will be have between 1-6 students per session. The minimum commitment for the job is 6 hours (12 lessons) and up to 19 hours a week. There are four (4) 30 minute time slots available seven (7) days a week from 5:40am-8:10am EST, as well as, five (5) 30 minute time slots available on Friday and Saturday from 7:40pm-10:50pm EST. Pay is between $16-20 an hour (2 lessons). The base pay is $8 per lesson and there is a $1 attendance bonus and $1 performance bonus equaling $10 per lesson. Payments are distributed on the 15 of the month where you are paid from the previous months time.   3. SayABC is unique in that they offer online teaching opportunities to people without a Bachelor’s degree. They offer an internship opportunity for college students in the US and Canada and they consider applicants with relevant teaching experience to demonstrate their ability if they don’t have a degree. So if you are a teacher’s assistant or Educational Aide, this could be an opportunity for you. For all others, if you are accepted, there is a three (3) month minimum commitment. The class schedule is from Monday to Saturday for summer camp and there are four (4) classes a day. The class times are 6pm-9pm Beijing time and each session is 40 minutes long. The class size is 4 students to facilitate group learning and you will have the same four (4) students for a minimum of three (3) months at the same time for three (3) times a week. There is also an opportunity to sub in the system by being willing to be on standby. Standby teachers can earn an extra $7 per lesson bonus. Class bookings are determined by the computer system based on the teacher’s availability to teach a homeroom for a consecutive nine (9) day period, excluding Saturday and Sunday. The pay rate is $15 per 40 minute class and you could earn a $6 bonus for performance which allows you to earn up to $21 per class.   4. 51Talk is another opportunity to teach English to Chinese students. The class sessions are 25 minutes long, and they require that you commit to teach at least 33.5 hours a week during the peak times of 7pm-11pm (Mon-Fri) and 9am-11pm (Sat & Sun). While not required, it is preferred that you have experience teaching and English teaching certifications such as LET, TESOL, and TEFL.
  5. DaDaABC offers one-on-one English classes for children ages 4-16. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree, you will need to be a Native English speaker. They have three (3) types of classes. The trial class is for beginners looking for an English teacher and is 14 minutes long, the elective classes focus on special interest topics and are 30 minutes long, and the major classes are for your regular students and are 30 minutes long.  They have two contract terms, a six (6) month and a 12 month. You have the ability to start immediately and earn up to $25 an hour. Payments are made on the 15 of the following month and will take 2-5 working days because it is an international bank transfer. Like VIPKid, the payment rate is based on your demo lesson. Payment is calculated by contract hours and teaching hours. There are also opportunities for bonuses such as prop fee and trial class bonus. Work requirement is to teach 2 hours a day and at least 2 days a week, and you are not required to plan any lessons. Classes are from 6pm-9pm (Shanghai time) every day and 10am-12pm; 2pm-4:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Part-Time Online Teaching Jobs

Virtual teaching is online teaching, but these opportunities have a little more of a traditional application process and a longer waiting period. There are also more teaching subjects that are available.

  1. Elevate K-12 allows you to work from home on weekdays from 8am-5pm EST. You are required to have a teaching certification. There are no queues of students, you will keep the same group of students for a series of sessions. You won’t have to create any lesson plans or lessons and you set your own hours. You will be working with a school’s Tier II and Tier III students. Subjects available are Math, ELA, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Robotics, and Coding (Coming soon).   2. Edmentum is an online solution provider to districts and colleges around the US. They provide education technology solutions such as Study Island, Courseware for credit recovery, and they have their own virtual academy. EdOptions Academy looks for part-time and full-time instructors to work from home. In addition to teaching virtually, there are also opportunities for Education Consultants.   3. VivaLing is an online language academy for kids. Teach kids Mandarin, Spanish, English and French. To become a coach, you need to be a native speaker or near native in the language you are going to teach, a minimum of two (2) years of experience working full time with children, and a certificate or degree in the language you are teaching.   4. Odysseyware Academy also looks for part-time instructors to work from home. They are a fully accredited, private virtual school for grades 3-12. Currently, they are seeking instructors from all states and subject areas to have on file for future needs.

Online Education Jobs

Online Readers, Scorers, and Evaluators are part-time employees for testing companies that scores testers responses or other submitted work. Scorers, Readers and Evaluators can work from home. Check out these companies below to see if there are any opportunities currently available.

Item Writers and Fairness Consultants work as independent contractors for testing companies. Writers develop test questions for educational assessments. Opportunities exist mostly for Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies content areas. Fairness Consultants review the test items for fairness for standardized tests. Consultants must also have knowledge in a specific content area.

Online Tutoring Jobs

Starting your own tutoring business gives you the flexibility to share your knowledge on your own time. There are students looking for help in all subject areas. This option may take some time to get some clients, but once you start having a steady clientele, the extra income will come in handy. Check out some of the most popular services that have a steady flow of students looking for help.

  1. Wyzant-To help you get your tutoring business started, Wyzant has a tutor job board that allows you to respond to tutoring requests in your area. You can choose to tutor online or face-to-face (if local). Applications typically take about 48 hours to be approved as a tutor. Payments are made on the 1st and 15th of the month by direct deposit or check.
  2. Chegg Tutors will send students to you that match the subject area and time you are available to tutor. Make extra money if you tutor in a high-demand area. Payments are made on a weekly basis.
  3. Tutor.com requires that you are available to tutor at least five (5) hours a week. They tout that they bring the clients to you so that you don’t have to advertise for business. You will have the ability to create a tutoring schedule each week, or you can log on unscheduled and pick up available session in your subject area. You are paid a set hourly rate dictated by the subjects you tutor. The application process takes about 1-3 weeks to complete.
  4. TakeLessons is unique in that there is a heavy focus on the fine arts content area. If you are a musically inclined, this is for you. The company handles all the marketing and booking so that you can get your business started. The number of clients that you could receive depends on the area you live in and the subject that you teach. Other tutoring areas include performing arts (acting, dancing, and signing), foreign languages, crafts and hobbies, computer skills, visual arts, and they typical academic subjects. Payments are distributed weekly through direct deposit to your bank account.
  5. Yup-If Math, Physics, and/or Chemistry is your specialty, then look into this new on-demand homework tutoring service called Yup. Yup is a mobile tutoring app that instant connects you with students looking for help. Students use the app to submit a photo of the problem they need help on and are connected to a tutor. The tutor and student work through the problem together. To become a tutor, you will need to fill out an application,take a subject and teaching exam. You could start connecting with with students and making money in about 24 hours after completing the application requirement. Tutors are paid based on experience, communication skills, content mastery, and the going market rate. Payments are made monthly via PayPal or direct deposit.
  6. iTutor is looking for tutors in Math, English, Science,Social Studies, Foreign Language, Art, and Music. You must have a certification in the content area you are applying for.

Online Gigs

The gig economy has taken off and allows you to make money within hours and receive compensation.

  1. GigEd-Sign up to be notified when companies are looking for educators to complete projects. Gigs seem to pop up every two (2) months. Last summer, I used GigEd, and made a quick $100 in two (2) hours.
  2. TinkerEd-Sign up and fill out a profile. Once you have filled out your profile, you can browse available gigs. Gigs tend to be plentiful for the K-8 grade levels that are core subjects.

Answering Questions Online

Show off your research skills and knowledge with these websites. Get paid for every answer you provide.

  1. Wonder Research-Their sign up process is simple. Fill out a form, show your research skills by completing an online quiz and a trial assignment. Once you are accepted, visit the research dashboard for available questions. For each question, you will be tasked to find five (5) or more high quality links and write a summary. Work on your own schedule and get paid for each research task you complete. They claim that the most active researchers earn $2000 or more a month.
  2. eNotes-Share your academic knowledge with students and get paid for each question that you answer. Payment depends on how much a student bids for an answer, as well as, your rank as an educator. Payment ranges from $4-37 per question. Fill out the application and answer one (1) sample question. Applications are reviewed within 72 hours, Monday through Friday.
